UNION, N.J. – Brittany Gibbs gave Kean a 3-2 win over the Frostburg State field hockey team in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Tournament, on Wednesday.
Frostburg State ends the season with a 15-7 overall record and ties the school record for most wins in a season.
Gibbs' goal came in the 64th minute and rescued the Cougars (15-5) who had squandered a 2-0 halftime lead by allowing two FSU (15-7) goals within the first seven minutes of the first half.
Olivia Triano and Lauren Kachnowski each netted a goal in the opening half (7:20 and 33:03) as the hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Frostburg State, making its first ECAC appearance since 2000, found the net just 1:50 into the second half. Sophomore
Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) scored for the second time in three games as she narrowed the Bobcat deficit to 2-1 with her ninth score of the season.
Classmate
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) evened the score at 2-2 just six minutes later when she scored her ninth goal of the season (42:58).
The game remained deadlocked until Gibbs found the net off a pass from Katie McGee to hand Kean the win.
FSU, which held an 8-7 advantage in shots over the Cougars, was helped by a pair of defensive saves. Freshman
Sami Topolski (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) cleared a ball off the backline in the first half on a shot by Triano and junior
Liesa Bohannon (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) stopped a McGee shot in the 46th minute to help keep the score at 2-2.
Ashlie Berghold made one save in the win for the Cougars while sophomore
Samantha Foland (Myersville, Md./Middletown) endured the loss for the Bobcats.
