FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior
Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) scored a career and game-high 26 points and Frostburg State defeated Shenandoah 77-70 in non-conference men’s basketball action, Monday evening.
Wansley, who led all players at the half with 12 points, combined with sophomore
Brian Anderson’s (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) 13 to help the Bobcats start the season 1-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
FSU shot just 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the field but made seven three-pointers (7-of-24) as it held Shenandoah to zero three-pointers and forced 31 turnovers.
The game featured 16 ties and 19 lead changes and the Bobcats scored nine of the contest’s final 11 points for pull away from the Hornets.
SU’s Chris Schrader tied the game for the final time (66-66) with a jumper at 1:15 but Wansley hit one of his two huge three-pointers at 1:05 to swing the momentum in favor of the Bobcats for good. From there, the Hornets made a pair of free throws but FSU made six shots from the charity stripe down the stretch for the win.
FSU held the game’s largest lead, 47-41, with 14:13 showing in the second half. From that point on, the half featured seven ties and 12 lead changes until Wansley’s three-pointer.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied eight times and the lead changed hands a total of seven times but FSU managed the halftime lead with a last second three-pointer.
With three seconds left in the opening stanza, senior
Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) came down with a rebound and found Wansley with an outlet pass. Wansley took a few steps and hit a running jumper from just inside midcourt to give the Bobcats a 34-31 lead at the break.
Frostburg State returns to the floor when it hosts Johns Hopkins next Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00 pm.
