FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior Mike Bowers (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Frostburg State men's soccer squad to a 6-1 defeat of La Roche in the first round of the 2009 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, Saturday night.

Box Score

The fourth seeded Bobcats (12-6-1) led just 1-0 at halftime, but poured in five goals in the second half to breeze past the fifth seeded Redhawks (8-10-1). Gilbert Unineza scored La Roche's only goal off a corner kick in the 68th minute.

FSU controlled the game throughout and kept the ball in the La Roche end for much of the contest. FSU's defense limited the Redhawks to five shots, including three in the second half. Meanwhile, the Bobcat attack totaled 22 shots, 11 each half.

Freshman Brian Davis (Rockville, Md./Wootton) scored the lone tally of the opening stanza at 27:49.

Senior Steven Jacobsen (Waldorf, Md./West Lake) started the second half frenzy with a goal at 55:14 off an assist from junior Danny Hutchins (Baltimore, Md./Parkville).

Freshman Shawn Baker (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) and Bowers pushed the lead to 4-0 with back-to-back goals in less than a minute at 64:18 and 65:02, respectively.

After La Roche scored to narrow the gap to 4-1, Bowers found senior Greg Bistany (Greenbelt, Md./St. John's College) in front of the net for the fourth goal of the second half at 71:13.

Sophomore Michael Hurst (Church Hill, Md./Queen Annes County) finished off the scoring in the 89th minute, outracing three defenders and burying a shot in the back of the net for a 6-1 final.

FSU goalkeeper Stephen Cavallo (Charlotte, N.C./East Lincoln) needed just one save for the win.

FSU moves onto the tournament semifinals for the eighth-straight year and will travel to top seed Medaille on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
