TOWSON, Md. - Frostburg State women's tennis team had four top-five place finishers at the Goucher Invitational this weekend, including a third-place finish is the second flight of the doubles competition.
Senior
Caroline Shedd (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and junior
Vicky Stafford (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) were defeated in the first round of the first flight of the doubles matches by Ana Estevez and Melissa Wernoch of Richard Stockon 7-5 and 6-4. The Bobcat duo then went on to defeat Beth Handy and Marie Rau from St. Mary's (Md.) in the consolation match, 6-3, 7-5. Shedd and Stafford dropped the 5th/6th place match to Christy Calvery and Hillary lasher (Penn St. Behrend), 6-3, 6-4, to come out with a sixth place finish on the day.
Senior
Monie Cuddahee (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and sophomore
Jannill Sites (Waynesboro, Pa./James Buchanan) defeated Ilana Gross and Vickey Casey (Goucher), 6-0, 6-2, in the first round of the second flight of the doubles matches. They dropped the semi-finals match, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0, to Stephanie Cox and Alex Van Buskirk (Moravian), but went on to defeat Chelsea Jones and Sarah Tefft in the 3rd/4th place match to finish third in the second flight of the doubles matches.
Freshman Elly Dennenfelser (Joppa, Md./John Carroll) was defeated by Carly Heinz (Goucher) in the first round of the first flight of the singles competition, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0. Dennendelsery then went on to win the consolation match by defeating Wendy Ogbolu (Stevenson) 6-0, 6-0 and won the 5th/6th place match, 6-0, 6-2, over St. Mary's (Md.) Katie Lacker to pick up a fifth place finish on the day.
Freshman
Megan Martin (Richmond, Va./Mills Goodwin) picked up a third place finish in the second flight of the singles competition by defeating Chelsea Bradcovich (St. Mary's (Md.)) 6-1, 6-1, in the first round. Martin lost to Chelsea Ott, 6-2, 6-3, in the semi-final match but went on to defeat Erin Fallon (Gwyneed-Mercy) 6-2, 6-3 in the 3rd/4th place match.
Senior
Liz Coblentz (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) defeated Sam Baugher from Stevenson 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the third flight of the singles matches but then was defeated by Jessica Scarpello (Gwyneed-Mercy) 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-finals and by Leslie Durante (Penn St. Behrend) 6-2, 6-0 in the 3rd/4th place round for a fourth place finish on the day.
FSU is back in action on October 5 at home against non-conference opponent Fairmont State at 4:00 pm.
