WEXFORD, Pa. - The Frostburg State men's tennis team captured third at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, this weekend.
Penn State Behrend took home the title with 22 points followed by Penn State Altoona in second (16) and Frostburg State in third (16). Pitt-Bradford finished fourth (8) and Pitt-Greensburg was fifth (1).
Freshman
Mike Stevenson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) picked up his first championship title in the number two singles competition after defeating Erkin Nasirli from Penn State Behrend (6-7, (5), 6-2, 6-4). In the second round Stevenson won against PSA's Thomas Van Antwerp to advance to the finals (6-0, 6-4).
Senior
Greg Shedd (Middletown, Md./Middletown) captured the runner-up title in the No.1 singles match after falling to PSB's Elliot Blackstone in the finals with scores of 6-3, 6-2. Shedd defeated Steven James from Penn State Altoona in the second round to advance to the finals (6-0, 6-2).
In the first doubles competition, Shedd and Stevenson finished in the runner-up position. They defeated UPB's Roberto Pombosa and Doug Atteberry to advance to the finals. Penn State Behrend's Blackstone and Jon Henderson captured the title after winning against Shedd and Stevenson in the finals by a score of 8-3.
Freshmen Tyler Forester (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and
Ryan Miller (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) picked up the runner-up title in the No. 2 doubles competition. The duo won against Erkin Nasirli and James Getty from PSB to advance to the finals (8-6) but fell in the finals to Penn State Altoona's Kyle Yerty and Scott Pickrell (8-6).
In the number three doubles match, freshman
Steve French (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Mike Hurst captured second after being defeated by Penn State Behrend's Kelly Manning and John Michalko by a score of 8-4. In the second round, French and Hurst picked up the win against Andy Rosborough and Pat Bloom to advance to the finals (8-4).
The Bobcats are back on the court against Waynesburg at home April 24 at 3:00 pm.
