WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington and Jefferson used two homeruns to blast its way past the Frostburg State baseball team 5-3 in the regular season finale for the Bobcats, Tuesday evening.
FSU (24-13) grabbed an early run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by senior
Teon Richburg (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph), which knocked home classmate
Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) who walked to lead off the inning.
The Presidents (29-11) countered as Jim Pasquine hammered his seventh homerun of the season off Bobcat starter
Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern). Pasquine's smack also plated W&J centerfielder Andy Trettle to hand the hosts a 2-1 advantage it would not surrender.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Washington and Jefferson added a two-out run off junior
Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) who came on in relief of Beachy after the Pasquine homerun. Foshay recorded two innings of work allowing just one hit and the one run.
W&J again found its stroke as designated hitter Tyler Kaido led the bottom of the sixth inning off with a homerun against FSU reliever
Spencer Madsen (Easton, Md./St. Michaels) for a 4-2 lead.
After the Presidents extended the advantage to 5-1 in the seventh the Frostburg State offense began its attempt at a comeback in the ninth. After W&J retired the first two batters of the ninth FSU began a run as junior
Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) and freshman
Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) each reach base. Junior
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) delivered in the clutch with a double down the leftfield line scoring Kroboth and Sapp to close the gap to 5-3.
After the Garrity double freshman pinch hitter
Doug Anuszewski (Eldersberg, Md./Liberty) drew a walk to bring the winning run to the plate in the form of Clark. Washington and Jefferson relief pitcher Mitch McClay managed to gather his composure to force Clark to flyout to the outfield and seal the Presidents 5-3 victory.
Senior
Mike Jester (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson) led FSU at the plate as he recorded a 2-for-3 contest. On the mound Beachy suffered the loss to drop his record to 5-3 on the season.
W&J used seven pitchers in the contest, while FSU put six on the mound as each team prepared to enter their respective conference tournaments this coming weekend. The Presidents are the No. 1 seed in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and Frostburg State goes into the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament as the No. 2 seed.
The Bobcats return to the field at 9:00 am on Friday, May 8 in the championship-round of the AMCC tournament against No. 3 seed Penn State Altoona in Erie, Pa.
