ERIE, Pa. –
Sophomore Trevor Conner (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/Kent School) hurled the Frostburg State baseball team into the second day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship tournament, Friday afternoon.

Frostburg State rode a complete game effort in the second contest of the day by Conner to a 7-2 win against No. 4 Pitt-Greensburg in order to advance to the second round of the AMCC playoffs. The loss eliminates UPG from the tournament as they dropped their first contest of the day to No. 1 Penn State Behrend. Conner scattered nine hits through 9.0 innings, while allowing just a single earned run with four strikeouts.

Pitt-Greensburg grabbed the early 1-0 lead on a Shane Molyneaux RBI single in the first inning. Frostburg State would not stay down long as Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) drove in leadoff hitter Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 1-1.

UPG again found its way on the board with a single run in the top of the sixth to yet again put FSU on the comeback trail its had seen most of the day. This time around the Bobcat offense prevailed by finding its groove for four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth in order to pull out a convincing win.

In the seventh, junior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and senior Mike Jester (Preston, Md./Colonel Richardson) each had two-run doubles, while freshman Pat Sapp (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) accounted for the two runs in the eighth with a two-RBI single to seal the 7-2 win.

In the second contest, Derr led from the dish with a 3-for-4 effort and scoring two runs.

The Bobcats fell in the opening contest of the tournament against No. 3 seed Penn State Altoona. The Lions jumped on FSU early as starter Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern) surrendered six runs in just 1.2 innings.

Frostburg State used five relievers in an attempt to cool the PSA bats to no avail as the Lions took a 8-0 lead before the Bobcats finally found the board in the bottom of the third inning. After cutting the deficit to 8-2 in the fourth inning Penn State Altoona plated seven straight runs to blow the game open at 15-2. Frostburg State put another single run across in the seventh inning and again PSA responded with its own run by adding four to the board in the eighth for the final advantage of 19-3.

FSU was led at the plate in game one by Sapp who had a perfect 3-for-3 contest with one RBI.

Frostburg State will return to action as 2:00 pm against the loser of the contest between No. 3 Penn State Altoona and No. 1 Penn State Behrend to be played earlier in the afternoon Saturday, May 9.
