Women's Basketball Posts Second-Straight Win Against Penn State Altoona

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Brittany James (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) tallied her seventh double-double of the season as the Frostburg State women's basketball team posted its second-straight win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Altoona, 73-69, Wednesday evening.

James netted 20 points for FSU (13-5, 10-3) and pulled down 13 boards while junior Elizabeth Carrington (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) scored 18 and classmate Lisa Byer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh (Allegany College)) had 13. Senior Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md., Western Tech) recorded a game-high 16 rebounds for the Bobcats in the win.

In the first half, Frostburg State jumped out to an early six-point lead over PSA (15-4, 10-4) with 12:45 left in play after a three-pointer from Byer, 16-10. The teams continued to trade points until the Bobcats had a four-point scoring run to give them a seven-point advantage, 28-21, with four minutes remaining until the break.

Over the next three and a half minutes, the Lions rallied and cut the Frostburg State lead to only one point after it went on a six-point run, 28-27. A jumper and pair of free throws from Carrington in the remaining 20 seconds of the half put the Bobcats up by five going into the break, 32-27.

In the second half, FSU lead by as much as 10 points at the 14:24 mark, 46-36, and the 11:36 mark, 51-41. The Lions rallied over the next four minutes and chipped away at the Bobcat lead to get within one point, 54-53, after a jumper from Tamara Thomas off an Alicia Glasser assist.

In the next four minutes of the game, Frostburg State led by six points three times but the Lions fought back and tied the game, 66-66, with 1:57 remaining after a pair of free throws from Glasser. The Bobcats were able to regain the lead with less than two minutes in play and led by six with nine seconds remaining when Wright hit a pair from the foul line, 73-67. Courtney Carroll netted a jumper with five seconds left to give the end score of 73-69.

Glasser led the Lions in points with a game-high of 24 while Thomas netted 14. Glasser also pulled down eight boards in the loss.

Frostburg State is back in action Saturday, January 30 when it travels to AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend for a 1:00 pm match up.
