FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State University junior forward
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) added another honor to her list of post-season awards this year as she was recently named to the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-East Region second team.
Russell led the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) and the Bobcats in several categories and set FSU single-season records in goals (27), assists (16) and points (70). She finished the year ranked fifth in the country in points per game (3.18), ninth in assists per game (0.73) and 11th in goals per game (1.2). She scored in 16 of 22 games and netted a season-high four goals in FSU's 5-1 win over Medaille.
She helped Frostburg State finish the season 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the AMCC. The Bobcats won the AMCC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, both for the first time since 2005.
Russell, a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II selection, is the second-straight NSCAA All-Scholar recipient for the Bobcats. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Gwinn was named to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas College Women's Scholar All-East Region.
Russell's all-scholar award is the sixth post-season honor this year. She also collected NCAA Division III Women's All-Great Lakes Region third team honors, ECAC Division III South Women's All-Star Offensive Player of the Year and First Team honors and was the AMCC Player of the Year and First Team All-AMCC honoree.
