FROSTBURG, Md. - In the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament, the No. 4 seed Frostburg State men's basketball team will host the No. 5 seed Mt. Aloysius, Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00 pm at Bobcat Arena.
The Bobcats (16-8, 13-7) come into the 2009-10 tournament on a four-game winning streak, scoring 100+ points in the final two games of the season. FSU swept regular season play against MTA, including a 106-93 win over the Mounties on January 21.
Frostburg State is currently first in the league in scoring offense (78.8 ppg) and seventh in scoring defense (72.6 ppg). The Bobcats are first in the league in offensive rebounds (13.8) and fourth in defensive rebounds (24.8).
Mt. Aloysius (14-11, 12-8) enters the first round on a three-game losing streak, including loss in its regular season finale to No. 3 seed Pitt-Bradford, 69-68. The Mounties are third in the league in scoring offense (75.7 ppg) and eighth in scoring defense (74.3 ppg). MTA is also third in the league in defensive rebounds (25.5).
Picking up the top seed for the second year in a row is Medaille. The Mavericks finished the regular season with an overall record of 21-4 and an AMCC record of 16-4. MED comes into the tournament on a two-game skid, losing its final game of the regular season to No. 7 seed Pitt-Greensburg, 72-68. Medaille earned a first round bye and will host the semifinals and final round of the tournament Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday Feb. 27, respectively.
In the first game of the opening round of the tournament, No. 3 Penn State Behrend (18-7, 14-6) will host No. 6 Penn State Altoona (12-13, 10-10)at 6:00 pm. The second game will feature No. 2 Pitt-Bradford (15-10, 15-5) at No. 7 Pitt-Greensburg (12-13, 10-10) at 7:00 pm. The winner of the Mt. Aloysius/Frostburg State game will take on No. 1 Medaille in the first game of the semifinals.
The AMCC championship match is scheduled for Saturday, February 26 at 3:30 pm. The AMCC Tournament champion will receive an automatic bid the NCAA Division III Tournament.
