Baseball Walks Off with a Win, Defeats Allegheny 6-5

CROZET, Va. – Sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit Frostburg State baseball’s second walk-off gaming-winning homerun of the season as the Bobcats defeated non-conference opponent Allegheny, 6-5, Saturday afternoon to push their winning streak to four games.

After going down in order in the top half of the first inning, the Gators (0-1) put the first runs of the game on the board, scoring two runs off a two-run single with one out. AU added to its lead in the third with a two-out RBI single. The Gators led 3-0 going into the bottom of the third.

The Bobcats (6-2) got two of the runs back in the third. Seniors Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) and Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) led off the inning with back-to-back walks followed by a sacrifice bunt from junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)) to move the runners to second and third. Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown CC)) hit an infield single to score Derr and put runners on the corners. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shepherd)) hit into a fielder’s choice to score Kroboth and cut the Gator led to 3-2 after three innings of play.

FSU tied the game at three each in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single to score Derr from Heatwole. The Bobcats took the lead in the fifth when AU pitcher, Matthew Niedzwiecki walked in a run to score senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). Frostburg State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off a costly error by the Gator’s second baseman to score Ridenour.

Allegheny tied the game at five in the top of the seventh with a two-run, two-out single to right center.

Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)), who came on in relief of senior Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) in the top of the seventh, pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Bobcats in the game going into the bottom of the ninth.

Summerfelt led off the ninth with a line-drive homerun down the left field line to win the game for the Bobcats, 6-5, and give them a second walk-off victory of the season.

Greene finished the day 3-for-5 with three hits and one RBI while Summerfelt went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Foshay pitched 6.0 strong innings for the Bobcats, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out five and surrendering no walks. Quayle picked up the win for FSU, tossing 3.0 innings, striking out two and giving up two runs on only one hit.

The Bobcats return to the diamond in Crozet, Va. on Sunday, Mar. 7 as they finish the three-game series with Allegheny with a double-header starting at 12:00 pm.
