ALTOONA, Pa. – The Frostburg State baseball team split with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, Penn State Altoona, Thursday afternoon taking the first game 13-5 but falling in the second, 2-0.

The Bobcats (13-7, 1-1) jumped out to an early lead in game one scoring three runs in the first inning. FSU is now 9-3 when scoring first and 8-0 when putting 10 or more runs on the board. Junior
Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown CC)) reached on a fielder's choice and classmate
Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) walked to put two runners on for senior
Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). With one swing of the bat, Garrity put the Bobcats ahead, 3-0, with a three-run homerun to right field.
The Lions (4-13, 1-3) got one run back in the bottom of the first, but both team were held scoreless for the next three innings to keep the score 3-1 going into the top of the fifth.
Sophomore
Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) drew a walk to lead off the fifth. Greene was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Garrity once again. Garrity doubled to center field to bring home Summerfelt and Greene and increase the Bobcat lead to 5-1. Garrity advanced to third on the throw and scored on senior
Matt Ridenour's (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) RBI double down the left field line. FSU led 6-1 after five and a half. PSA scored one in the home half of the inning on a solo homerun to bring the score to 6-2.
The Bobcat bats exploded in the sixth and put seven runs on the board and seal the win for FSU. Senior
Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) doubled to get things going for Frostburg State. Classmate
Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) and Summerfelt hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for Heatwole. Heatwole drove home Derr and Kroboth with a two-run single. Garrity singled to load the bases again for the Bobcats followed by a RBI-single from Ridenour. Sophomore
Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) walked to load the bases for the third time in the inning and pinch-hitter classmate
Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) drew a walk to bring home Heatwole. Derr worked the third walk of the inning to score Garrity. With the bases loaded, Kroboth singled to left field to score Boyd and Anuszewski and give the Bobcats a 13-2 lead after five and half.
PSA scored three in the bottom of the seventh but could not overtake the FSU lead and the Bobcats took the first game, 13-5.
Junior
Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)) got the win for Frostburg State pitching 6.0 strong innings, giving up only two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out a season-high eight batters.
FSU dropped the second game of the doubleheader in a pitcher's duel, 2-0. Despite a strong effort by senior
Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) on the mound, the Bobcats were not able to get their bats going in the final game of the twinbill.
Beachy threw 6.0 innings giving up two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out a season-high seven batters.
Garrity finished the afternoon going 3 for 6 with three runs scored and five RBIs.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, April 3 with their homeopener against AMCC opponent Medaille with the first pitch at 12:00 pm.
