Baseball Sweeps Second-Straight AMCC Opponent

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a grandslam in the late innings of the first game of the doubleheader as the the Frostburg State baseball team swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, Hilbert for its second-straight twinbill sweep, Saturday afternoon. FSU took the first game 15-3 and the second 6-2.

The Bobcats (18-8, 6-2) scored early and often in the first game as they defeated the Hawks (4-12, 1-3) 15-3 and pushed their record to a perfect 10-0 in games when scoring 10 or more runs.

FSU put up three runs in the top of the second inning on two hits. Summerfelt doubled home senior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), who led off the inning with a single, for his first RBI of the day. Sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) crossed the plate on a passed ball to bring the score to 2-0. Senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) hit a sac fly to right field to bring home Summerfelt and give FSU the 3-0 going into the bottom of the second.

The Hawks answered with two runs in the home half of the second, but were shut down over the next three innings by Bobcat pitcher, senior Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory).

Frostburg State added five more runs in the top of the third off an RBI single from both Anuszewski and Summerfelt, a one-run double off the bat from Boyd and two-run single from Derr. The Bobcats added a run in each the fourth and fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead going into their half of the sixth. FSU put up another five-run inning in the six to take ahold of the game, 15-2. Garrity drew a walk to lead off the inning and Anuszewski singled to advance Garrity to third. Junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett)) walked to load the bases for Summerfelt. The third baseman launched his second homerun of the season, a grandslam to give FSU the 14-2 lead. Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) brought home the final run for the Bobcats with an RBI fielder's choice to score Boyd.

The Hawks scored the last run of the ballgame on two hits in the bottom of the seventh but could not rally against Bobcat pitcher, junior John Capasso (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown (Wesley)). Foshay picked up the win for FSU going 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on five hits and striking out five. The righthander moved to 2-1 on the season. Capasso finished his day with 2.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out five.

FSU started the second game with four runs in the top of first and are now 12-4 when scoring first and 10-3 when scoring in the first inning. Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown (Sheperd)) drove home junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) with an RBI single to score the first run of the game. The Bobcats added three more runs in the inning off a two-run double from Garrity and an one-sing le from Summerfelt.

Ridenour held the Hawks scoreless through the first three innings, allowing only one hit over that time. HC put its first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single.

The Bobcats answered back in the top of the fifth when Ridenour hit a sac fly to centerfield to bring home Heatwole. FSU led 5-1. The Hawks scored their last run of the game in the home half of the inning on a RBI double. FSU led 5-2 after five.

Frostburg State scored the last run of the game in the top of the seventh after Boyd doubled and senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) reached on an error by the Hawks first baseman that allowed Boyd to cross the plate. Sophomore Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning, including one strike out, to finish the game, 6-2, in favor of the Bobcats.

Ridenour picked up the win for FSU throwing 6.0 strong innings, giving up two runs, on six hits and striking out a team season-high nine batters.

Summerfelt ended his day going 4-for-7 with seven RBIs.

Frostburg State returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 13 when it travels to Steubenville, Ohio to take on AMCC opponent Franciscan at 1:00 pm.
