Ridenour Homers to Lead Baseball in a Sweep of La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning of the second game to lift the Frostburg State baseball team over La Roche, 5-2, and complete its fifth Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference sweep of the season. The Bobcats topped the Redhawks in the first game 4-1.

The Redhawks (16-13, 8-6) started the scoring off in the bottom of the second inning with one run on two walks and an error. LAR did not pick up its first hit of the game until the bottom of the fourth.

FSU (24-8, 12-2) answered in the top of the third with three runs to take the lead, 3-1. Sophomore Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) reached on a fielder’s choice and senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) doubled him home for his first RBI of the game. Junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) singled to put runners on the corners and classmate Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) reached on a fielding error by the La Roche shortstop that allowed Kroboth to cross the plate and give FSU the lead, 2-1. Frostburg tacked on an insurance run in the inning with a sacrifice from Ridenour to bring home Heatwole.

After the unearned run in the bottom of the second, junior pitcher Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven (CCBC Essex)) shut down the Redhawks over the last six frames of the game, allowing only two hits, one in the fourth and one in the sixth and giving up three walks in his 7.0 strong innings of work. Ross fanned eight batters on the afternoon.

Kroboth scored the last run of the game on an inside the park home to deep left center to give the Bobcats the 4-1 lead and the win in the first game.

La Roche once again scored first in the second game with two hits and one run in the bottom of the first. FSU quickly answered with a run of its own in the top half of the second. Sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and junior Rich Schuler (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy (Cecil)) hit back-to-back singles before senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Boyd hit into a fielder’s choice to bring home Anuszewski and tie the game at one a piece.

The score was held at 1-1 until the fifth inning when Heatwole walked and Greene doubled down the left field line to break the tie and give the Bobcats the 2-1 lead. LAR would not let the Bobcats hold the lead for long and scored the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Heatwole started the top of the seventh with a single over the short stop’s head and Greene hit his third double of the game down the left field line to put runners in scoring position for Ridenour. Ridenour sent a ball over the right field fence to give the Bobcats the 5-2 lead going in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)) got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh before giving up his first walk of the game, though got another ground ball off a Redhawk bat finish the game and pick up his sixth win of the season. Quayle pitched 7.0 strong innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on four hits and just one walk while striking out eight on the day.

With his three doubles in the second game, Greene has taken over as single-season extra base hit leader with 30 and is second in doubles with 19.

The Bobcats return to the diamond on Saturday, April 24 when they travel to take on AMCC opponent, Pitt-Bradford at 1:00 pm.
