Baseball Edges Out Medaille, Takes Second Game

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team used a three-run second inning to take the second game, 3-2, after dropping the first game 9-6 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Medaille, Saturday afternoon.

Despite scoring the first run of the ball game in the bottom of the first on a balk to score senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area), the Bobcats (14-8, 2-2) were unable to hold on to the early lead as the Mavericks (9-7, 3-1) put up six runs in the top of the second and another three in the fourth to take the first game of the doubleheader, 9-6 .

FSU put together a late inning rally in the six to chip away at the MED lead. Kroboth led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and put himself in scoring postiion stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) walked to put two runners on for senior Matt Ridenour. (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Sheperd)) Ridenour doubled down the left field line to bring home Kroboth and Greene and cut the Maverick lead to 9-3. Classmate Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) followed suit and hit an RBI single to right to score Ridenour. After sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) doubled to put runners in scoring position, junior Tim Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) singled to left and scored Garrity. The Bobcats cut the lead to 9-5 at the end of six.

Greene scored the last run of the game with an RBI single to right field to score Kroboth, though the Bobcats could not overtake the Mavericks and dropped the first game, 9-6.

MED struck first in the second game of the double-dip, scoring one run in top of the first on a passed ball. FSU answered in the bottom of the second putting up three runs on three hits and one Maverick error. Garrity led off the inning with a triple to right center and came on to score on Anuszewski's single down the right field line. Senior Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) doubled to centerfield to score Anuszewski, who advanced to third on a passed ball. Kroboth was able to reach first on an error by the Maverick thirdbaseman, which allowed Derr to score the third run of the inning and give the Bobcats the lead, 3-1 after two.

The Mavericks scored thier last run of the game in the top of the fifth on a passed ball and were not able to put together a late inning rally as the Bobcats held on to the win, 3-2.

Ridenour got the win for the Bobcats throwing 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, neither earned, on three hits while striking out five. Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)) got his first save of the season coming in the game in the seventh inning. Quayle faced five batters giving up no hits with one stike out.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, April 7 when the face AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg at home with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm.
