BEREA, Ohio - Frostburg State University sophomore David Thomas (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) struggled in his three attempts in round one of the long jump and missed the finals at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Thursday evening.

Thomas' best jump of 6.83 meters (22 ft. 5 in.) placed him in seventh place in the second heat and 10th overall. Thomas entered the championships as the third seed after landing the nations third longest jump of the season at 7.39 meters. Thomas was trying to become just the second All-American in FSU history in the long jump.

It was also a tough day for the top two seeds in the long jump as both Stryker Pena and Gavan Bass of McMurry University both missed the finals after enterting the championships with the top two jumps of the outdoor season.

Stephen Morton of Massachusetts Institute of Technology earned the national title in the event with a finals jump of 7.24 meters (23 ft. 9 in.). Kellen McCrary of Wisconsin La Crosse (7.20 meters) and Buzzy Brown of Carthage College (7.20 meters), finished second and third respectively.
