FROSTBURG, Md. — The summer months can usually be a slow time for coaches in collegiate athletics, but three Frostburg State University head coaches are making the most of their down time by advancing their careers and helping educate young athletes.
Bobcat men's basketball coach Webb Hatch recently spoke at the Potomac Basketball Camp, directed by former FSU men's basketball player and alumnus Kevin Murphy ('71). Coach Hatch spoke to roughly 100 campers on offensive skill development. Later this summer, Coach Hatch will be directing camps in Arlington, Va. (July 12-16) and at FSU (July 26-30).
Meanwhile, Ashley Manion (women's lacrosse) and Jody Pepple (women's basketball) joined close to 70 female coaches, representing every NCAA division, at the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy Dimension 2 in Cambridge, Mass. The NCAA Women Coaches Academy provides skills training for coaches at all levels to assist them in being more efficient, productive, resourceful and successful. The academy is designed for women coaches who are ready and willing to increase their individual effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that directly affect their personal and team success.
Coach Manion taught a session about dealing with the unexpected and protecting her team. Other speakers at the three day clinic included Dan Tudor, who spoke about recruiting - selling for coaches, Judy Sweet, Sue Enquist (former UCLA softball coach - 10-time national champion) and Dr. Robyn Odegaard, who lectured about champion performance development.
In addition to Manion and Pepple completing dimension two, several FSU coaches have attended the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy over the last few years including Barbara Letourneau (Assistant Volleyball Coach), Kaymee Kelly (Head Swimming Coach) and Vicke Best (Assistant Women's Basketball Coach).
