Several Baseball Players Keep Busy This Summer

FROSTBURG, Md. – A handful of Frostburg State baseball players stayed busy this summer competing in different summer leagues to prepare for the upcoming season.

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year, senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) played in the Maryland Collegiate Baseball Leauge for the Gabrills Athletics. Qualye finished his season with a 2-1 record and 2.05 ERA after 22.0 innings of work. The righthander struck out 27 and gave up only 12 hits. Not only did he pitch, Quayle helped his team at the plate this summer hitting .333 in 39 at bats. Quayle was honored on the MCBL All-Star team for his efforts on the field. The Athletics finished the summer with a record of 10-17.

Joining Qualye in the MCBL was junior Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus). Boyd played for the Gaithersburg Giants and hit .283 over 92 at bats. Boyd stole 21 of 22 bases attempted and joined Quayle on the All-Star team. Junior Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) joined Boyd on the Giants. O'Dell appeared in eight games making seven starts. The righthander finished the summer with a 3.82 ERA over 37.2 innings and a record of 2-5. Boyd struck out 38 batters. O'Dell was also named to the MCBL All-Star team. Joining his teammates on the Giants was senior Jonathan Sally (Rockville, Md./Magruder). Sally tossed 13.1 innings and collected one save in 11 appearaces. Sally finished the summer with a 7.42 ERA and a .250 opponents batting average. The trio of Bobcats on the Giants helped the team to a 19-10-1 finsih, second in the MCBL and play into the semi-finals round.

Also playing in the MCBL was sophomore Adam Baxley (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) for the Western HC Renegade. Baxley helped the team to a 13-13-1 finish for the summer.

Down the coast in the North Carolina, senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Caroll) competed in the Costal Plains League for the Gastonia Grizzlies. The second baseman hit .196 in 29 gaves over 97 at bats. Greene collected 10 RBIs over the summer as helped his team to a 37-24 finish before the season ended in a loss in the semi finals round of playoffs.
