FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State University men’s track & field team is peaking at the right time as the Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships are set for this Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6. FSU will have another factor on its side as the league championships make their way to Bobcat Stadium.
This spring, the Bobcats have one win and two runner-up finishes on their resume and are looking to take the outdoor title after finishing runner-up at the CAC Indoor Championships in February.
Frostburg will have its work cut out for it as the men’s team currently holds five of the league’s best times/distances. Salisbury leads all schools as it holds nine of the conference’s best marks. York (four) and Wesley (three) round out the schools that are currently in possession of one of the league’s top marks.
However with the loss of senior mid-distance specialist Wes Jacobs to a professional internship, the Bobcats will have some ground to make up. Fifth year head coach Dale Luy will rely on his talented group of sprinters and throwers if the Bobcats want to overcome Salisbury for the league crown.
Senior Patrick Pinchinat and junior Chauncey Manson highlight a talented and deep group of sprinters for the Bobcats.
Pinchinat holds the league’s fastest time in the 100-meter dash this spring with a 10.91. He has two wins and has hit the ECAC qualifying mark twice in the 100 this season at both Goucher (10.91) and Shippensburg (11.05). Pinchinat is fifth in the CAC this spring in the 200-meter dash in 22.38.
Manson, the 2011 CAC Outdoor Champion in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, heads into this year’s championships second in the 200 (22.09) and fifth in the 100 (11.08). Manson will figure into the mix in both events after posting a pair of wins in each event this outdoor season.
Rounding out the group of sprinters are juniors Xzavier Robertson and Jason Jackson. Robertson is fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.08) while Jackson is ninth in the 200 in 22.72.
The Bobcats also have a hold on the top spot in 4x400-meter relay (3:23.66) and are second in the 4x100-meter relay (42.85).
In the throws, junior Christian Smith and freshman Seth Stine will pace the Bobcats.
Smith is third in the shot put at 13.79 meters and third in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.16 meters. He has finished in the top-five in the shot put and hammer throw a combined seven times this season. Stine has been a nice surprise this spring for FSU and is currently second in the CAC in the javelin at 48.83 meters.
In its first year as a member of the CAC last year, Frostburg took fourth place on the men’s side at the outdoor championships at York (Pa.) last May. The Bobcats rebounded for a second-place finish at the inaugural indoor championship in February and will look to continue their trend towards the top of the CAC standings this weekend.
