Four Named To NFCA All-Region Teams

FROSTBURG, Md. – After one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Frostburg State softball team had a record four players named to the 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Atlantic Region teams.

Senior Taylor Vandegrift and freshman Renay Aubel were named to the All-Atlantic Region First Team, while junior Caitlin Lovend was voted to the second team. Senior Shari Beavers rounded out the four honorees as she was named to the third team.

The foursome were the only four members of the team to start all 45 games and the group all tied for the school record in games played. The four all-region selections are a school record as the Bobcats previously had six honorees from 2002-2012.

In her final year with FSU, Vandegrift set two single-season school records, tied for another single-season mark with a teammate and she appears in numerous career lists. She led the CAC and set school records in hits (70) and at-bats (165) and shares the single-season mark in runs scored (48) with Lovend.

Vandegrift appeared in 158 games as a Bobcat and ends her career second all-time in runs (125) and hits (187), third in at-bats (495), fourth in total bases (219), sixth in batting average (.377) and seventh in both RBI (71) and walks (42). A three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection, Vandegrift had at least one hit in 38-of-45 games this season, led the Bobcats in runs, hits, triples (4) and at-bats, while hitting .424.

Aubel burst on the scene in her first year of collegiate softball, leading the CAC and setting FSU’s single-season record with 16 home runs. A First Team All-CAC honoree, Aubel finished her first season second in the league in both RBI (56) and walks (23) and third in plate appearances (164) and total bases (99). She hit .328 (45-for-137) with 32 runs and a .715 slugging percentage.

Lovend garnered her second-consecutive all-region honor after leading the CAC and setting a Frostburg record with 62 RBI. She tied Vandegrift for the team lead in runs (48) and both share the single-season mark. A three-time All-CAC First Team selection, Lovend paced the Bobcats in slugging percentage (.755), on-base percentage (.523) and walks (28).

With one year left in her Frostburg playing career, Lovend is currently the school’s all-time leader in batting average (.445), walks (73) and RBI (141). She is second all-time in runs (110), hits (162), home runs (33) and total bases (286).

Beavers, a Second Team All-CAC honoree this spring, led the CAC and set a school record with 16 doubles. She finished second in the league in at-bats (147) and hits (65) and was fifth in RBI (45). She is third all-time in school history in home runs (23) and fourth in doubles (28).

The foursome led the Bobcats to a school record 33-12 overall record and the 2013 ECAC South Region Tournament Title.
