Top 10: No. 7 - Men’s Soccer vs. York (Pa.) – CAC Tournament Semifinals

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State men’s soccer match against York (Pa.) in the CAC Tournament semifinals fits the bill as an exciting home game, but would be much higher in the count if it weren’t for the final outcome. The Bobcats suffered a 4-3 setback in double overtime and this marks the second time a loss has cracked the top-10 most exciting games. The OT loss falls in at No. 7 in the countdown.

Frostburg trailed for much of the contest against the nationally ranked Spartans and needed a game-tying goal with just one minute left in regulation to send it to overtime. The two squads finished in a 1-1 deadlock through two overtimes during the regular season and the playoff contest carried more excitement.

York, which ranked in the top 20 at the time of the playoff contest, scored two goals in just under five-and-a-half-minutes in the opening half for a quick two goal advantage at 39:22.

The second goal seemed to stun the Bobcats, but only briefly as Frostburg rebounded with a goal to cap the first half of action. The all-region tandem of junior Chris Jones and senior Ryan Russell handed the hosts some much needed momentum heading into intermission. Jones tipped in a free kick from Russell at 41:37 to bring the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.

Neither team struck until nearly 26 minutes in the second stanza when York (Pa.) again grabbed a two-goal lead. Antonio Bua scored for the second time and the Spartans took a 3-1 lead.

FSU rebounded in a big way to electrify the Bobcat Stadium crowd and bring the FSU bench alive. Shawn Baker scored on a penalty kick (72:33) to bring the deficit back to one at 3-2, but Frostburg wasn’t done there. The hosts continued to wear down the York defense with pressure and junior Pablo Torrano broke through with a header into the corner of the net at 89:00.

Following a scoreless first overtime, York scored the game’s final goal on the only shot for either team in double overtime for the win.

York rode the momentum from the win to a CAC Tournament Title, its fourth-straight league crown, and eventually an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite 8.
