Top 10: No. 6 - Softball vs. York (Pa.) – Game One

FROSTBURG, Md. - A walk-off single doesn’t sound as exciting as a walk-off home run, but softball’s 4-3 eight-inning, come-from-behind victory over York (Pa.) provided plenty of action and checks in at No. 6 in the countdown.

The Bobcats entered the series with York on a four-game winning streak and had outscored opponents 47-10 during that stretch.

However, FSU’s high-scoring offense did not faze the Spartans as they gave the Bobcats all that they could handle.

Junior standout Caitlin Lovend singled home solo runs in the first and fifth innings, but York matched Frostburg with a single run in both the fourth and sixth inning to knot the contest at 2-2 heading into the top of the seventh.

York didn’t appear to be in a position to threaten in the seventh inning as the first two batters grounded and popped out, respectively. However, the Spartans’ Brooke LaBell singled to left field, while the next two batters walked to load the bases. Bobcat starter Mary Ann Moore struckout the final batter of the inning to escape the jam.

In the eighth, York singled home a run to grab a 3-2 lead, their first of the game. In the visiting half of the eighth, the Spartans looked to be in the driver’s seat as they recorded two quick outs.

Senior Shari Beavers, the third batter of the inning, got things with going with a double to left field that plated sophomore Bailey Ellsworth for the tying run. Senior Megan Butzner walked and freshman Allison Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Freshman Lauren Capece then effortlessly singled home Beavers for the game-winning run as the Bobcats narrowly avoided the loss. It was Capece’s only hit of the game.

Frostburg returned to form in the second game, needing just six innings to down YCP, 14-5. The Bobcats would go on to extend their winning streak to nine games.
