FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Greg Schneider earned his sixth win on the mound and junior Devin Bell homered in his first game back in the lineup as the duo helped power 12
th-ranked Frostburg to an 8-5 win over 20
th-ranked Christopher Newport, Thursday morning.
The host and top-seeded Bobcats improve their overall record to 24-9 with their third win of the season over the ranked Captains (25-14).
Schneider posted another strong outing for FSU striking out five batters in 7.0 innings of work. He allowed just three earned runs and scattered 10 hits. Senior Nick Huff tossed the final 0.2 innings for his CAC-leading ninth save of the spring.
The Captains struck first in the first inning for their only lead of the ballgame as Tommy Vitaletti posted an RBI single to center.
The Bobcats were quick to answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Jamaal Windom singled to lead off the frame and later scored on fielding error in the outfield before senior KJ Hockaday scored on a wild pitch for the second run.
CNU evened things up in the top of the third when Vitaletti again drove home a runner, this time on a double to right.
However, Frostburg again followed up the Christopher Newport run with several of its own. Windom tripled to right before senior Pat Sines singled him home with an infield single to third base.
Junior Brad Garrant doubled down the left field line that scored Sines before scoring on another CNU error, this time on the infield. Bell, who has missed the last several games with an injury, took advantage of his first action by smacking a two-run home run that scored senior Connor Cooper for a 7-2 Bobcat lead.
CNU and FSU traded solo runs in the seventh. Vitaletti doubled home another run for the visitors, while Hockaday crunched a solo home run, his sixth of the season.
As the game headed into the ninth inning with Frostburg leading 8-3, the Captains had one last charge in them as they scored two runs in the top of the ninth before Huff came in for the save. Vitaletti doubled home yet another run and later scored on a fielder's choice before Huff got Kyle Corwin to pop out for the 8-5 final.
Windom finished 3-for-5 with two runs, while Hockaday was 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a home run. Bell finished 1-for-4 with a two-run homer a run scored.
Frostburg advances in the tournament and will face fourth-seeded Wesley tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 pm. Meanwhile, the loss eliminates CNU from the tournament.
